Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water flows over land or through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive material, while also collecting substances from animal and human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water may include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic pollutants such as salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil and gas production, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from various agricultural, urban, and residential sources
  • Organic chemical contaminants resulting from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive substances that may be naturally occurring or result from oil and gas extraction activities

All tap water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least trace amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA establishes similar protections for bottled water. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, elderly individuals, and infants. These populations should seek medical advice about their water consumption.

LEAD ADVISORY: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health issues, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters drinking water through plumbing materials. When water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

South Elgin Municipal Water Report Info

South Elgin has a rich history, culture, recreation opportunities, and natural beauty. The Fox River carved out a picturesque valley through northeastern Illinois long before the first settlers arrived in the 19th century. By 1835, the Fox River Valley was established, and a small settlement with a blacksmith shop, flour mills, and quarry emerged, known as Clintonville. The area was officially incorporated as the Village of South Elgin on April 20, 1897.

The Village gradually transformed from a rural farming community and railroad depot into a thriving modern municipality. Residents enjoy the natural beauty of the Fox River while living close to workplaces and schools. In 2007, Money Magazine ranked South Elgin among the best places to live in the United States, citing economic opportunity, excellent schools, safe streets, and strong community spirit.

South Elgin continued earning recognition, ranking in CNN/Money's Top 100 again in 2011 for economic strength, job opportunities, top schools, and safe streets. In 2014, consumer finance site NerdWallet evaluated 121 Illinois locations to determine the best cities for homebuyers, with South Elgin ranking #4. In 2015, the site examined over 200 Illinois locations for families with young children, placing South Elgin at #7. Finally, in 2016, South Elgin ranked #86 on Safewise's list of safest Illinois cities.

Located in Kane County approximately 40 miles northwest of Chicago, South Elgin is accessible via IL Routes 31 and 25 connecting to St. Charles southward and Elgin northward. Residents use IL Route 19 and U.S. 20 (Lake Street) for east-west travel. The 4.6-mile Stearns Road Corridor offers a scenic route with lush vegetation, natural landscapes, and pedestrian/bicycle trails linking IL Route 25 at Dunham Road with McLean Boulevard and Randall Road.
