Southbridge is nestled in Worcester County, Massachusetts with a population of 16,719 according to the 2010 census. Officially incorporated on February 15, 1816, it's among fourteen Massachusetts municipalities that maintain "The town of" in their official names despite adopting city governance structures.
Located just north of the Connecticut border in the Quinebaug River Valley, Southbridge offers convenient access to major routes 90, 20, 84, and 395, connecting residents to Hartford, Springfield, Providence, Boston, and Worcester. Its 21 square miles blend hills and flatlands, farms and developed areas, industrial zones and downtown districts, creating diverse urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods.
Known as the "Eye of the Commonwealth," Southbridge has a rich history in optical manufacturing. Under the Wells family leadership, American Optical Company ("AO") grew into the world's largest producer of ophthalmic products, employing over 6,000 people globally at its peak.
The industrial revolution transformed Southbridge, bringing Victorian architecture, broad shaded streets, and waves of immigration as people arrived to work in the mills. While neighborhoods developed near industrial areas, outlying regions remained largely agricultural.
Today, the town's 17,400 residents benefit from numerous services including a state-of-the-art center/high school, three primary schools, a private Catholic school, full-service fire and police departments, a 3,000-acre watershed with advanced filtration, an expanded public library, well-maintained wastewater treatment, a municipal airport, YMCA, attractive Town Common, full-service hospital, four large parks, and connecting trails to conservation areas.
