Settlement History
The Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee tribes originally inhabited this land now known as Spring Hill. The soil, enriched by centuries of natural vegetation, attracted abundant wildlife and Native American settlements. Early pioneers with land grants valued the beauty and fertility of these rolling hills and natural springs. Soon, a thriving community developed with churches, schools, medical professionals, lawyers, blacksmiths, and merchants. Beautiful homes, estates, and structures created a distinctive landscape, some of which still stand today as testament to the pride of Spring Hill's original residents.
Transportation Development
Spring Hill, with the arrival of the railroad, established early connections to Nashville and its cultural institutions, enhancing the community's growth and access to larger markets.
Civil War Impact
In 1861, the Civil War threatened the community. Spring Hill residents endured occupation by both Union and Confederate forces, creating bonds among townspeople that outsiders found difficult to understand. The occupation and conflict in Spring Hill preceded the famous Battle of Franklin. Despite post-war devastation from tornadoes and fires, the town rebuilt and flourished, becoming known for livestock breeding, rich pastures, agriculture, and quality education.
Industrial Growth
In 1980, Spring Hill transformed from a primarily agricultural community to a manufacturing center with the arrival of the General Motors Saturn Plant. The influx of new residents changed the small town into a city, blending multi-generational families with newcomers whose energy revitalized arts, business, and education. The Saturn Plant became an economic anchor for Spring Hill.
Location and Demographics
Spring Hill covers approximately 28.5 square miles, located 35 miles south of Nashville. The city spans two counties, Maury and Williamson, and belongs to the greater Cumberland Region. Spring Hill's population grew to 29,036 in 2010, a 276% increase from 2000. By 2018, the Special Census recorded 40,436 residents, with projections showing another 78% growth from 2010 to 2030. While this growth presents challenges, it also creates opportunities for economic expansion and community development.
