DETECTED CONTAMINANTS: Superior MD No 1 consistently monitors for various contaminants in your water as required by Federal and State regulations. The following information shows all detections found from January 1 to December 31, 2017, unless otherwise noted.

The State of Colorado requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because concentrations of these substances aren't expected to vary significantly year-to-year, or our system isn't considered vulnerable to this type of contamination. Therefore, some data, while representative, may be several years old.

GENERAL INFORMATION: All municipal water, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791) or visit http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants.

VULNERABLE POPULATIONS: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice about their water consumption from healthcare providers.

WATER SOURCES: Our water (both tap and bottled) originates from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and can pick up substances from human and animal activity.

SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT: The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has provided us with a Source Water Assessment Report. For general information or to obtain a copy, visit www.colorado.gov/cipher/car under "Guidance: Source Water Assessment Reports" or contact Jim Widner at 303-499-3675. The report provides a screening-level evaluation of potential contamination sources, helping us prepare for future protection efforts and treatment requirements.

Superior MD No 1 Drinking Water Report Info

Superior's identity is deeply rooted in coal mining history. The earliest mines in the region were established in the late 19th century, with the Town itself founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904. The name "Superior" reportedly references the exceptional quality of coal discovered in the area.

Mining dominated Superior's economy until the Industrial Mine closure in 1945. Following this closure, many residents relocated, transforming the community into a quiet agricultural settlement. The population remained stable at approximately 250 residents until recent decades.

For a comprehensive overview of Superior's heritage, consider reviewing "Lost Superior: Remembering the Architectural Heritage of a Colorado Coal Mining Town" by the Superior Historical Commission, available at Town Hall.

The community's major residential development, Rock Creek Ranch, was subdivided in 1987 though development continues today. Through 2006, approximately 2,700 single-family homes and 1,800 multi-family residences were constructed in Rock Creek, increasing Superior's population to roughly 12,483 residents.

Future development plans include commercial, retail, multi-family residential units, and additional single-family homes. The Town encompasses approximately four square miles, featuring 594 acres of parks, green space, and open space, complemented by 27 miles of trails.
