Englewood's origins trace back to the gold rush era. In the mid-1800s, prospectors heading to California stopped in Colorado to try their luck in local streams. William Green Russell, a miner from Georgia, along with 12 fellow prospectors, discovered gold deposits along the South Platte River. They established a mining camp near the junction of Little Dry Creek and the South Platte River – an area that would eventually become Englewood.
This discovery yielded more gold than their previous ventures, triggering the famous "Pikes Peak or Bust" gold rush of 1859. The gold discovery brought pioneers to the region, and in 1864, an Irish immigrant named Thomas Skerritt claimed a 640-acre homestead encompassing much of present-day Englewood. Skerritt is now recognized as the "Father of Englewood."
Other settlers followed Skerritt's example, with Hannah Higgins becoming the first female homesteader in 1868 when she filed a land patent on 40 acres. In the 1870s, Jacob C. Jones purchased 80 acres from Skerritt. The fertile river valley provided ideal conditions for early settlers to cultivate fruit trees and crops.
Small settlements such as Petersburg, Cherrelyn, and Orchard Place gradually emerged to serve residents. By 1880, urban development had begun with Denver roads extending southward and street blocks being planned. According to local legend, Skerritt grew tired of traveling the old Santa Fe Trail to Denver to sell his produce, so he created a wide roadway by plowing furrows and dragging logs. This became known as "Broadway" – still one of the main thoroughfares in the metro area today.
