Thomson-McDuffie County W&S Comm. Municipal Water Report Info

The Thomson-McDuffie Water and Sewer Utility provides essential water and sewer services to homes, businesses, and industrial facilities throughout the City and County. Our team maintains two filtration plants and vital distribution infrastructure including chlorination stations, water mains, and metering systems.

Our water system is anchored by two treatment facilities that process surface water from Clarks Hill Lake in the northern region and Usry's Pond in the south. The Georgia EPD has authorized us to withdraw and treat up to 3.1 million gallons daily (MGD) from Clarks Hill Lake and 1.5 MGD from Usry's Pond.

Our water treatment process includes several key steps:

  • Coagulation and Flocculation: We add positively-charged chemicals that neutralize negative charges in soil and dissolved particles, forming larger particles called floc.
  • Sedimentation: The heavier floc settles to the bottom of treatment basins through gravity.
  • Filtration: Clear water passes through specialized filters containing sand, gravel, and charcoal to remove remaining particles, dust, parasites, bacteria, viruses, and chemicals.
  • Disinfection: We add disinfectants like chlorine to eliminate any remaining microorganisms and protect water quality during distribution.

After treatment, water is pumped through our distribution network, ensuring reliable service 24/7. Our distribution system includes approximately 290 miles of underground pipes ranging from 4 to 20 inches in diameter, plus 6 elevated storage tanks with a combined capacity of 1.8 million gallons. This infrastructure has been developed over many decades and extends throughout Thomson and McDuffie County.

Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

Georgia CDC Tap Water Info

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:

Thomson-McDuffie County W&S Comm. Municipal Water Company and CDC
  1. How do I report a missed service collection? Please contact Republic Services at 713-726-7307 or notify the city at 281-275-2450.
  2. How do I schedule a household hazardous waste collection? Please contact Republic Services at 713-726-7307 to arrange pickup. See our curbside collection flyer for additional details.
  3. Can I request a different size cart? Yes. Residents may choose between 35, 65, or 95-gallon carts for garbage and recycling. To request a size change, contact Republic Services at 713-726-7307. A cart exchange fee will apply.
  4. How can I dispose of household electronics? Certain types of electronics can be properly disposed of through the curbside household hazardous waste program.
  5. Where should I store my carts? Carts should be stored according to your HOA deed restrictions. Ideally, keep carts in your garage or behind fencing or vegetation. City ordinance doesn't require hidden storage but prohibits carts from blocking sidewalks.
  6. What's the proper cart placement for collection? Position carts at the curb edge with wheels against the curb, handle facing away from the street, and lid opening toward the street. Maintain at least 4 feet clearance from obstacles like utility poles, mailboxes, trees, hydrants, and parked vehicles.
  7. Why is spacing between carts and other items necessary? Different vehicles collect different materials, requiring proper access. The collection arm needs adequate space to safely operate without tipping other containers or damaging property.
  8. What if my cart is damaged or missing? Contact Republic Services at 713-726-7307 to report damaged or missing carts. Replacements are provided at no cost if stolen or damaged beyond repair through no fault of the resident.
  9. Should I bag my waste materials? Garbage should be bagged to maintain cart cleanliness. Recyclables should be placed directly into the cart without bags.
  10. What if I have more garbage than fits in my cart? First, ensure you're maximizing recycling to free up space in your garbage cart. Additional garbage carts are available for $5 monthly by contacting Republic Services. Extra recycling carts are provided at no charge.
  11. How are large items like furniture and appliances collected? A separate collection service handles bulky waste items such as stoves, refrigerators (with Freon removed), and furniture that cannot be broken down. Bulky waste excludes construction materials, demolition debris, and hazardous substances.
  12. When is my bulky waste collection day? Items too large for regular carts are collected on your monthly bulky waste day. Check your local service schedule to determine the next collection date for your area.
  13. How do I safely dispose of hazardous materials? Hazardous waste can be disposed of through the free curbside household hazardous waste program, which complements existing services.
  14. What is a wastewater cap and how is it calculated? Commercial customers are charged based on 100% of water usage. For residential customers, April through March wastewater charges are based on either your average monthly water usage from February/March or 12,000 gallons, whichever is lower. New customers without usage history are charged based on the citywide average of 6,480 gallons.
