Frequently Asked Questions About Municipal Water Service

Q: How do I become a customer of Connecticut Water?

A: First determine if we service your area by checking our territory map. If we do, contact us at 1-800-286-5700 to establish service.

Q: What information do I need to open an account?

A: Please have ready: service address, name(s) for the account, contact phone number(s), and desired start date (excluding weekends/holidays). Renters must complete a Billing Authorization Form. Most residential customers receive quarterly bills.

Q: How do I close my account?

A: Contact customer service at 1-800-286-5700 with your account number or service address, desired end date, forwarding address for final bill, and daytime phone number. A representative will visit between 8am-4:30pm on your requested date. If a new customer has requested service, water will remain on; otherwise, service will be turned off for a $40 fee.

Q: Why is my water bill higher than expected?

A: Higher bills often result from increased usage—new appliances, lawn watering, pool filling, or irrigation systems. If you haven't changed usage patterns, check for leaks. Bills may also cover more than 90 days, or follow estimated readings. Our Leaks Cost Big Dollars Fact Sheet explains how to detect leaks and their financial impact.

Q: Should I shut off water when leaving for winter?

A: It depends on your heating system and absence duration. Consult a plumber about winterizing interior pipes and fixtures, especially with hot-water heating systems. If heat will be off for extended periods, schedule water service shut-off at the street (fees apply). If keeping heat on, maintain at least 55 degrees and have someone check the system periodically.
