Valdosta/Lowndes County has historically been a popular gathering location. From the early Creek and Seminole Indians to Spanish missionaries and American settlers, this region's fertile landscapes have drawn people to establish homes here. Lowndes County was founded in 1825, with Franklinville becoming its first county seat in 1828. By 1837, Troupville had become the county seat.
When the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad decided to establish a right-of-way four miles south of Troupville, residents made a remarkable decision to secure their town's future—they physically relocated it four miles to the new location. The town was renamed Valdosta, honoring "Val d'Aosta," former Governor George Troup's plantation home. In 1860, Valdosta was officially incorporated as the new county government seat.
Valdosta's economic history is deeply connected to agriculture. The region's sandy loam soil allowed the city to emerge as the inland capital for Sea Island cotton production. When the boll weevil devastated cotton crops in the early 1900s, farmers adapted by growing alternative crops including pecans, peanuts, and tobacco.
The business district experienced significant expansion from 1890 through the late 1920s, with many of the city's historic public buildings constructed during this period. The Valdosta Heritage Foundation now works to preserve and restore the city's remaining historical structures and districts. A notable 2016 achievement was the restoration of the Wisenbaker-Roberts House, Valdosta's oldest known residence located in the Fairview National Register Historic District.
Today, Valdosta features six Historic Districts on the National Register of Historic Places: Valdosta Commercial Historic District, Fairview, North Patterson, Brookwood North, Southside and East End. Additional individual listings include Valdosta City Hall, Sunset Hill Cemetery, the Lowndes County Courthouse, the Carnegie Library, and the Crescent.
The pioneering spirit of the town that relocated to meet the railroad remains evident today. Agriculture continues as a key economic driver, with pine trees now serving as the region's most important natural resource. The city's strategic location and economic success continues attracting diverse businesses, including nationally-recognized brands, all contributing to Valdosta's reputation as "South Georgia's Regional City."
