About Us
To guarantee tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for bottled water contaminants to protect public health. All water sources, whether tap or bottled, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and substances from animal presence or human activity.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial Contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides/Herbicides: From agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
- Organic Chemical Contaminants: Synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, or septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Municipal Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Water Source Information
Vineland Water Utility customers benefit from an abundant groundwater supply. Our groundwater isn't exposed to air or direct pollution like surface water sources. All 13 municipal wells draw from the KirkwoodCohansey aquifer at depths between 160-200 feet. This aquifer contains approximately 17 trillion gallons beneath the protected Pinelands reserve. Our facilities can provide roughly 3.3 billion gallons of water annually.
Water Treatment Process
Raw water is drawn from the KirkwoodCohansey aquifer by vertical turbine pumps and sent to aerators, which oxidize iron and raise pH levels. Some wells pass water through filters to remove iron and radium, while others use air strippers to eliminate volatile organic compounds. The water then enters mixing tanks where lime, chlorine, and corrosion inhibitors are added before distribution to homes and businesses.
Community Involvement
You're invited to participate in public forums regarding your water quality concerns. The Vineland City Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays monthly at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, Seventh and Wood Streets, Vineland, NJ.
Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP)
SWAP is a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection program that studies current and potential threats to public drinking water sources statewide. The NJDEP has completed and issued a Source Water Assessment Report for this water system, available at HTTP://www.new jersey.gov/dep/water supply/swap/index.HTML or by contacting NJDEP's Bureau of Safe Municipal Water at (609) 292-5550.
