About Us
We're proud to present our annual municipal water quality report covering January 1 through December 31, 2016. In recent decades, water safety and reliability have improved significantly compared to any previous time in history. Our dedicated team works tirelessly every day—at all hours—to deliver the highest quality tap water without interruption.
Though challenges remain, we believe that investing in community education, advanced treatment technologies, infrastructure improvements, and staff training will result in reliable, high-quality water for you and your family.
Understanding What's in Your Water
To ensure tap water safety, the U.S. EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. All water sources, including bottled water, naturally contain small amounts of certain substances. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and substances from animal or human activities.
Potential water contaminants include:
- Microbial Contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants: salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and Herbicides: from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemical Contaminants: synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Community Involvement
We welcome your participation in our public forum to voice concerns about your municipal water. We meet the 3rd Thursday monthly at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, 54 Union Blvd, Wallington, NJ.
Cryptosporidium Testing
Cryptosporidium is a microbial parasite found in surface water throughout the U.S. While filtration removes it, standard filtration methods cannot guarantee 100% elimination. PVWC sampled the Passaic and Pompton rivers where cryptosporidium was detected at levels of 0.4 Oocysts/L and 0.857 Oocysts/L, respectively.
Current testing cannot determine if these organisms are viable or capable of causing illness. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Most healthy people recover within weeks, but immunocompromised individuals face higher risk of severe illness. We encourage them to consult healthcare providers about appropriate precautions. Cryptosporidium requires ingestion to cause disease and can spread through means other than water.
