The quality of your water begins with its source. In 2016, approximately 68.9% of Mahwah's municipal water originated from underground sources, while the remaining 31.1% was supplied by United Water (Suez) New Jersey. The groundwater is extracted from 7 wells positioned throughout the Ramapo River Valley-fill aquifer.

Before distribution, all water undergoes disinfection at the well sites to eliminate potential pathogens. Municipal water sources—whether from taps or bottles—include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land surfaces or through underground formations, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, potentially picking up substances from animal or human activities.

The NJDEP has completed and published a Source Water Assessment Report for Mahwah's water system, available at www.NJ.gov/dep/swap/ or by contacting the NJDEP Bureau of Safe Drinking Water at 609-292-5550. This assessment analyzes contamination vulnerability for all Mahwah wells. Though the wells are rated highly susceptible to various contaminant categories, this indicates potential risk rather than actual contamination.

Mahwah continually monitors for regulated contaminants and implements treatment systems whenever substances are detected at frequencies or concentrations exceeding allowable levels. The following table summarizes susceptibility ratings for seven contaminant groups (plus radon) affecting Mahwah's wells, showing the number of wells rated high (H), moderate (M), or low (L) for each category. For information about purchased water susceptibility, please refer to United Water's source water assessment report.
