About Us
About your water supply: The town of Rahway primarily obtains water from the North Subset of the Rahway Sea. This vital water source is situated in the North Part Watershed, spanning 40 square miles across Union and Essex counties. The watershed encompasses densely populated municipalities including Orange, Maplewood, Irvington, Union, Springfield, Westfield, Cranford, and others.
On a typical day, approximately 4.85 million gallons of purified water are pumped to serve roughly 26,500 residents. The treatment process begins at the Westfield Avenue Water Treatment Plant, where raw water undergoes multiple purification stages. First, an aeration station removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Next, coagulants and polymers eliminate silt and particles, followed by sedimentation where particulate matter settles.
The water then passes through sand, carbon and activated charcoal filtration to improve taste and remove remaining particles. Liquid chlorine is added to eliminate bacteria and viruses, along with a corrosion inhibitor to minimize copper or lead dissolution from home plumbing. Before distribution through 96 miles of mains, a small amount of fluoride is added to promote oral health.
Regarding sodium levels, while the EPA doesn't specify a maximum level for sodium in municipal water, the NJDEP recommends an upper limit of 50 parts per million (ppm). Recent testing showed that Rahway exceeded this recommendation, with readings ranging from 26 ppm to 512 ppm. For most individuals, sodium intake from water isn't significant compared to dietary sources, but those on sodium-restricted diets should consult healthcare providers.
Concerning lead safety: While the water is lead-free when leaving the treatment plant, service lines and home plumbing materials may contribute lead. To reduce potential exposure after water has been sitting, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption. More information about lead in water is available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or online resources.
