About Us
HEALTH INFORMATION
Lead exposure through water can cause developmental delays in children, affecting physical and mental growth. Children may experience reduced attention spans and learning capabilities. Long-term consumption may lead to kidney problems or heart disease.
NITRITE CONCERNS
Infants under six months who consume water with nitrite levels above MCL may become seriously ill or even die without treatment. Symptoms include breathing difficulty and blue-baby syndrome.
SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT
Wapello Rural Water obtains groundwater from an alluvial aquifer near the South Skunk River south of Delta, Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has determined this aquifer is highly vulnerable to contamination due to its characteristics and overlying material.
The wells face contamination risks through pathways such as abandoned or poorly maintained wells. Additional water is purchased from Mt. Pleasant and Brighton, which use the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer, considered less vulnerable to contamination.
Surface water comes from Ottumwa Water Hydro, sourced from the Des Moines River. Assessment has identified contamination risks including soil erosion, agricultural chemicals, animal operations, wastewater facilities, waste systems, and petroleum products.
Water source assessments are available at the Wapello Rural Water office in Ottumwa during business hours. Turbidity monitoring serves as a treatment filter performance indicator regulated through treatment techniques.

Winter Weather Precautions
Extreme cold can cause pipes to freeze and potentially burst, resulting in flooding and costly water damage. If you've experienced frozen pipes before or during severe cold, allow one faucet to run very slowly, particularly those furthest from your main water line entry point.
Emergency Preparedness
• Know your water shutoff valve location to prevent home damage if pipes burst
• When away during cold weather, maintain home heating at minimum 55°F
• Have someone check your property during your absence
• If turning heat off, drain all water from pipes, toilets, and water heater, and disconnect the water heater power
Meter Pit Maintenance
Service personnel locate meter pits by the white plastic remote post. Please avoid accessing meter pits, especially in winter. If emergency access is necessary, ensure proper replacement of both the frost lid and meter pit lid to prevent meter freezing.
Service Calls
If experiencing no water or suspected frozen pipes, check internal plumbing before contacting our office. A $50 plus tax service charge applies if the problem is found on the customer side of the meter.
