About Us
INTRODUCTION
To comply with State regulations, the Town of Wheatfield Water/Sewer Department annually provides a comprehensive report describing the quality of your municipal water. This report aims to enhance your awareness of tap water and emphasize the importance of protecting our water sources. Last year, your tap water met all State health standards. We're proud to report our system did not violate any maximum contaminant levels or water quality standards.
In 2016, we conducted tests for over 100 contaminants with less than 25% detected. The NCWD tests for lead and copper every three years. In 2014, 50 sites throughout the district were evaluated, with copper concentrations below action levels at all sites. Lead measurements showed a 90th percentile level of 4.5 mg/L, below the regulatory limit of 15.0 mg/L, though three sites exceeded recommended action levels.
WATER SOURCE INFORMATION
Our water comes from the western branch of the Niagara River, known for excellent quality. During 2016, our system experienced no restrictions. The treatment facility employs prechlorination, coagulation, rapid mixing, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration. NCWD uses chlorination for disinfection, and adds fluoride and corrosion inhibitors before distribution.
The New York State Department of Health completed a Source Water Assessment under the State's program. This assessment compiled information about potential threats to raw water sources. The Great Lakes watershed is extremely large for detailed evaluation, but general concerns include storm-generated turbidity, wastewater, toxic sediments, shipping-related spills, and invasive species issues.

Wheatfield holds the distinction of being the final town organized in Niagara County, established from Niagara on May 12, 1836. Located on the southern boundary of the county, west of center, it extends further south than any other town in the area. The Niagara River forms its southwestern border while Tonawanda Creek defines its southern edge.
The landscape features a level to gently undulating terrain. The predominant soil type is clayey loam, which though challenging to cultivate, produces abundant grains – especially wheat, which inspired the town's name. Cayuga Creek flows across the northwestern section before emptying into the Niagara River, while Sawyer's Creek travels southeasterly through the southeastern portion before joining Tonawanda Creek.
The town encompasses four post offices: Martinsville, Bergholtz, St. Johnsburg, and Shawnee, alongside the city of North Tonawanda and the hamlet of Walmore in the northwestern corner.
