About Us
In accordance with State regulations, the Amsterdam Water Treatment Plant issues an annual report detailing the quality of your municipal water. This report aims to enhance public understanding of water quality and promote awareness of source water protection efforts.
Last year, our facility conducted tests for over 100 potential contaminants. This overview provides insight into water quality results from the previous year, including source information and comparison to State standards.
For questions regarding this report or your municipal water, please contact Robert Discenza, Chief Plant Operator, or Randy Gardinier, Lab Director at 843-3009. We believe informed consumers are our best allies in water quality protection.
The Amsterdam water system serves approximately 18,600 residents through 6,000 service connections within City limits. In 2016, the City delivered an average of 153,467 gallons daily to the Amsterdam water district and 209,634 gallons to the Florida water district for commercial and residential needs.
Total water production in 2016 reached 2.2 billion gallons, with a daily average of 6.1 million gallons processed and distributed. Our peak usage day reached 7.2 million gallons. This water supported domestic and industrial use, main flushing, firefighting, and accounted for undetected leakage.
For 2016, industrial customers were charged $4.41 per 100 cubic feet, while residential customers paid a flat rate of $411.10 per unit.

As the 21st Century begins, both traditional and emerging forces are reshaping post-industrial Amsterdam. Some elements remain constant, such as abundant water resources and strategic transportation access. Others are legacies from the industrial era: affordable housing, commercial spaces, and extensive civic infrastructure.
A new wave of immigrants, many Puerto Rican, are arriving seeking refuge from larger cities' challenges. As the focus shifts from those who witnessed Amsterdam's prime to newcomers with fresh perspectives, attention turns from recreation to future development.
The City's 2003 Comprehensive Plan outlined strategies to leverage existing assets, revitalize the urban core, and attract visitors, businesses, and residents. Many recommendations are now being implemented.
One certainty from Amsterdam's historical cycles remains: while geography significantly influences growth and decline, human decisions about land use—both beneficial (improved transportation and urban amenities) and detrimental (ownership barriers and misguided urban renewal)—will determine the timing, duration, and magnitude of the city's next growth period.
