About Us
We're pleased to present this year's annual water quality report. Our system successfully met all New York State requirements in 2017, with no maximum contaminant level violations.
Due to a documentation error, we missed collecting a water sample during the Health Department's designated month, though it was collected later. This procedural oversight did not impact water quality, and all test results were negative.
The Health Department has noted: "Canandaigua City is required to monitor water for specific contaminants regularly. Results of regular monitoring indicate whether your municipal water meets health standards. During 2017 we did not monitor for Secondary Organic Chemicals at the prescribed time and therefore cannot verify water quality during that specific period."
In April, our water facility entered the New York American Water Works Association competition and was recognized as the best-tasting water in New York State! This marks our second time winning this prestigious award, having previously been named second best-tasting in the state in earlier competitions.
No boil water advisories were necessary in 2017. We remain committed to providing high-quality water that meets or exceeds all state and federal standards. As regulations evolve, we continuously adapt our processes to implement changes efficiently and cost-effectively.
For health concerns related to this report, please consult your physician. For questions about this report or your water service, contact Peter Virkler, Chief Operator, at 396-5064.
Special Health Information: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to waterborne pathogens than the general population. People with compromised immune systems - including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants - face heightened risks. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their water consumption. Guidelines from EPA/CDC on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial contaminants are available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Water Hardness Information: On average, the hardness of your municipal water is 140 mg/L (ppm) or approximately 8.5 grains.

The EPA requires regular testing of municipal water supplies to ensure public safety. These tests monitor levels of regulated contaminants including disinfection byproducts, organic chemicals, and heavy metals that may pose health risks. Canandaigua's water supply undergoes rigorous treatment and filtration processes before distribution to local homes and businesses.
