About Us
Glen Cove's municipal water comes from five groundwater wells drilled into Long Island's aquifer system. The overall quality of these supplies ranges from good to excellent. Like all water sources (both tap and bottled), our water travels across land surfaces or through ground layers, dissolving natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials while potentially collecting substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include microbial contaminants, inorganic compounds, pesticides, organic chemicals, and radioactive elements. To ensure safety, both New York State and EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, similar to FDA restrictions on bottled water products.
The City of Glen Cove served approximately 28,500 residents in 2017, pumping 1.33 billion gallons of water. About 82.6% was billed directly to consumers, with the remaining water used for municipal facilities, fire protection, hydrant flushing, and accounting for main breaks and service line leakages.
Water Treatment Process:
- Chlorine is added to maintain bacteria-free quality
- Sodium hydroxide raises pH to reduce pipe corrosion (minimizing copper and lead leaching)
- Kelly Road well water undergoes air stripping to remove volatile organic chemicals
- Duck Pond Road wells utilize granular activated carbon filtration to remove organic chemicals and pesticides
All treatments comply with Nassau County Department of Health standards. The Seaman Road well has been removed from service. In late 2017, three wells at Duck Pond Road tested positive for Freon and were immediately taken offline. The City is constructing an emergency air stripping treatment system to address this issue.
Following state regulations, Glen Cove routinely monitors water quality for numerous parameters, testing for coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganics, lead, copper, nitrates, volatile organics, trihalomethanes, and synthetic organic compounds. Over 135 individual parameters are evaluated across all wells multiple times annually, resulting in more than 5,000 tests each year from distribution points and supply wells.

- What companies provide electric, gas, garbage, cable, and telephone services in Corinth? The City of Corinth only manages water, wastewater, and storm drainage utilities. The City also handles garbage billing services for CWD, which appear on monthly water bills. Various external providers supply gas, electricity, telephone, and cable television services. View External Utility Providers.
- Do I need to contact anyone before digging in my yard? Call Digtess at 811 before any excavation – they'll arrange for utilities to mark their lines. Remember, it's better to be cautious than to accidentally strike a water line.
- Does the City sell Toll Tags? Personal Toll Tag Accounts are available at City Hall. For information about replacement tags, business accounts, or adding tags to existing accounts, please call 972-818-6882 or visit www.ntta.org.
- How is my sewer charge calculated? Residential sewer rates are based on water usage during November through March. The highest consumption month is excluded, and the remaining three months are averaged to establish each resident's annual sewer rate.
- Why is my water bill different from my neighbor who has the same number of occupants? This common question has several explanations. Even with identical household sizes, bills vary due to individual usage habits. Home size doesn't affect consumption as much as resident behaviors do. Outdoor watering practices significantly impact your bill. Often, differences appear in the sewer charge, as each home's annual rate is calculated based on their specific winter month consumption averages.
