About Us
The Westbury Water District is pleased to present this year's Municipal Water Quality Report, required for distribution to all district residents in compliance with federal and state regulations. This document aims to inform you about the quality of water and services we provide daily.
Our primary mission is to deliver safe, reliable municipal water. The Board of Water Commissioners and staff are committed to ensuring your household receives premium quality water.
Water Source Information:
Westbury's water supply comes from groundwater pumped from 10 wells throughout our network, tapping into the Magothy aquifer beneath Long Island. The aquifer's water quality generally ranges from good to excellent, though localized contamination exists in some areas.
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential Contaminants:
• Microbial contaminants
• Inorganic contaminants
• Pesticides and herbicides
• Organic chemical contaminants
• Radioactive substances
To ensure tap water safety, the state and EPA establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water, providing equal public health protection.
In 2017, the Westbury Water District served approximately 20,500 residents, withdrawing 1.16 billion gallons from the aquifer, with about 93% directly billed to consumers.
Following state regulations, we routinely monitor your water for various parameters and contaminants, testing for coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganic substances, lead, copper, nitrate, volatile organics, trihalomethanes, and synthetic organics. Each district well undergoes testing for over 135 parameters multiple times annually.
We're proud to report that our district's water supply fully complies with all federal, state, and county regulations with no water quality violations present.
