About Us
In compliance with State regulations, Cohoes annually publishes a comprehensive report detailing our municipal water quality. This report aims to enhance public understanding of water resources and highlight the importance of protecting our water sources. We're pleased to report that last year, our municipal water met all State health requirements.
Our ongoing mission is providing safe, reliable water to our community. We continually strive to improve our treatment processes and safeguard our valuable water resources. If you have questions about this report or your water service, please contact: Michael Duffey, Chief Water Plant Operator at (518) 237-4320.
We encourage our customers to stay informed about their water service. City Council meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays monthly at 7:00 PM at City Hall.
Water Source & Treatment: Cohoes draws water from the Mohawk River, pumping it from the Brookfield Power Canal to our 75-million-gallon Raw Water Storage Reservoir. Our comprehensive treatment process includes:
- Potassium permanganate addition for taste and odor control
- Coagulation with aluminum sulfate to bind small particles
- Sedimentation to allow particles to settle naturally
- Filtration through sand filters to remove smaller particles
- pH adjustment with caustic soda for corrosion control
- Ortho-phosphate corrosion inhibitor for iron and manganese control
- Chlorination to prevent bacterial contamination
During warmer months, we re-chlorinate water in our two storage tanks for additional protection against bacterial contamination.
Water Distribution: Cohoes serves approximately 16,168 residents through 4,660 residential connections and 60 industrial services. We also supply a small section of Colonie with 6 residential and 2 commercial services. Our average daily demand is 2.3 million gallons, with a peak day of 3.3 million gallons. In 2017, we withdrew 828,729,000 gallons from the Mohawk River, treating 794,729,000 gallons for distribution.
Billing Information: Residential, Commercial, and Industrial customers are charged $3.70 per thousand gallons for both water and sewer services. There's an infrastructure improvement fee of $15/30/45 per quarter respectively. Billing occurs quarterly with no minimum usage charge.
