Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through soil, it naturally dissolves minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials. It can also pick up substances from animal or human activities. Potential contaminants in source water include: microbial pathogens, inorganic compounds, pesticides, herbicides, organic chemicals, and radioactive materials.

To ensure tap water safety, New York State and EPA regulations limit certain contaminant levels in public water systems. Similar regulations from the State Health Department and FDA establish safety standards for bottled water, providing equivalent public health protection.

The Hampton Bays Water District draws groundwater from eleven active wells throughout the community. These wells tap into the Froid and Magothy aquifers beneath Long Island. Generally, the aquifer water quality ranges from good to excellent, though some localized contamination exists. The District treats water from affected areas to remove contaminants before delivery to consumers.

The District maintains backup power generators at several well sites to ensure continuous water supply during emergencies like power outages. Water treatment includes pH adjustment with sodium hydroxide to reduce pipe corrosion, addition of CALCIQUEST (a phosphate product) as an iron sequestering agent to minimize water discoloration and laundry staining, and disinfection through carefully controlled calcium hypochlorite (chlorine) application.

  1. Is there a limit on the number of pets I can keep in my home? Yes. The City of Show Low restricts households to three family pets per dwelling. This means you may have 2 dogs and 1 cat or 2 cats and 1 dog or any other combination totaling 3 pets per residence.
  2. Is my dog required to have shots before being licensed? While Canine Distemper Virus vaccine, Canine Parvovirus vaccine, and other vaccinations are important, only proof of rabies vaccination is required to obtain a city license. The vaccination must remain valid for the entire license year or your dog must receive a booster before licensing.
  3. Does the City of Show Low require me to license my pets? City license tags help Animal Control locate owners of lost dogs and provide records of dog ownership in case of rabies outbreaks. Show Low's City Code mandates all dogs 4 months or older must have city tags if they've been kept within city limits for more than 30 days. Cat licensing is not required.
  4. How much does a license cost? Bring your rabies vaccination certificate to City Hall and pay $5 for a sterilized dog and $15 for a non-sterilized dog. Animal licenses are handled by the Administrative Services Department.
  5. Do I have to keep my dog on a leash when it's outside of the yard? Dogs may not run loose within Show Low city limits. If a dog is not contained in a fenced yard, it must be restrained by a leash.
