Pennsylvania Water Utility Companies

In compliance with Safe Municipal Water Act requirements, Whitehall Township Authority provides this annual Consumer Confidence Report to enhance public understanding of municipal water quality and highlight the importance of protecting our valuable water resources.

For questions about this report or water quality concerns, please contact Mrs. Lisa A. Helm, Manager at 610-770-1155, Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. The Whitehall Township Authority Board meets on the third Wednesday monthly at 1:00 PM at 1901 Schadt Avenue, Whitehall, PA 18052-3728. All meetings are open to the public.

Maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) are established with strict safety margins. To understand potential health effects of regulated contaminants, consider that someone would need to consume two liters of water daily at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of experiencing described health effects.

All municipal water, including bottled water, naturally contains some level of contaminants. Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to these substances than the general population, including:

  • People undergoing chemotherapy
  • Organ transplant recipients
  • Individuals with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders
  • Elderly residents
  • Infants and young children

These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbes are available through the Safe Municipal Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Water Source Information

Most of our municipal water comes from Authority-owned and operated groundwater sources. A small number of customers near the Whitehall-Allentown border receive water purchased from Lehigh County Authority. Source water travels across land surfaces or through ground, dissolving natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, while potentially collecting substances from animal or human activities.

A source water assessment completed in November 2004 by Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection found our sources potentially vulnerable to activities including auto repair shops, gas stations, underground petroleum storage, household products, road maintenance, lawn care applications, sewage systems, and pipelines. Assessment reports are available through the Pennsylvania DEP Wilkes-Barre office at 1-570-826-2511.

Potential Contaminants in Source Water

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants including naturally occurring minerals, urban runoff, industrial discharge, and agricultural practices
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and waste systems
  • Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from resource extraction activities
