On October 24, 2005, the Whitefish Bay Village Board approved a historic preservation ordinance, establishing the Whitefish Bay Historic Preservation Commission. This Commission is tasked with preserving the Village's historical and cultural heritage by identifying structures, sites, and objects that reflect elements of Whitefish Bay's cultural, social, economic, political, or architectural history.
The Commission safeguards this historic legacy by recommending qualified properties for designation as local historic buildings or sites and by maintaining an inventory of architecturally significant and historic locations. Additionally, the Commission documents Village history and makes this information available to residents.
In 2010, the Village commissioned an Architectural and Historical Intensive Survey Report that catalogs architectural and historical resources within Village boundaries. Various Historic Preservation documents, including the ordinance, procedures, and application forms for historic site designation are available through the links below.
For residents interested in learning more, we offer Frequently Asked Questions about the Historic Preservation Commission, resources for researching your Whitefish Bay home, information about the Whitefish Bay Medallion Project, and access to the Whitefish Bay Architecture and History Inventory.
Commission meetings typically occur at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at Village Hall. Meeting agendas are available several days before each meeting, in compliance with Wisconsin's Open Meetings Law, and minutes become available after approval by the Architectural Review Commission.
