All water sources, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of various contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes limits on contaminant levels in public water systems. The FDA sets similar restrictions for bottled water to provide comparable public health protection. Water quality is continuously monitored by both Lake County and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).

Water quality standards include the Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) - the level below which no known health risks exist, providing a margin of safety. Another standard is the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) - the highest permitted contaminant level, set as close to the MCLG as possible using available treatment technology. Both standards are established by the USEPA.
