Is there lead in my water? If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically enters tap water through service line materials and home plumbing components. West Virginia American Water takes responsibility for delivering quality water but cannot control the materials used in household plumbing systems.

We implement a corrosion control program by adding inhibitors to water leaving our treatment facilities, which helps minimize lead leaching from pipes. You can reduce potential lead exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has been sitting for several hours before using it for cooking or drinking. If concerned, you can request testing. For more information on lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction, visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead or call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.

Water Hardness: Our water hardness levels range from 24 to 66 ppm, or approximately 1 to 4 grains per gallon.

Sodium Content: The sodium level in your water is approximately 12.4 ppm (mg/L).

pH Levels: Water in our distribution system averages 7.3 pH units, which is considered neutral (neither acidic nor alkaline).

Fluoride: We add fluoride to maintain a level of approximately 0.67 ppm to help prevent tooth decay.

Partnership for Safe Water: West Virginia American Water participates in this voluntary EPA program committed to exceeding federal regulations for water quality. Our Weston Facility earned the Director's Award in 2010 and has maintained Partnership goals for 20 consecutive years.

Water Source: Our customers benefit from abundant water supplied by the West Fork River, a surface water source. In 2018, our treatment plant provided approximately 549 million gallons of clean water. Learn more about watersheds at www.epa.gov/owow/.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources completed a source water assessment of the West Fork River in April 2003, rating its susceptibility to contamination as high due to its exposure as a surface water body. To obtain a copy of this assessment, contact DHHR at (304) 356-4298 or visit: https://www.wvdhhr.org/oehs/eed/swap.
