About Us
The RWSA manages three water treatment plants (WTP) providing municipal water to Charlottesville and the urban "ring" served by the ACSA. These facilities include:
- South Rivanna WTP (drawing from South Rivanna Reservoir)
- Observatory WTP (utilizing Ragged Mountain and Sugars Hollow Reservoirs)
- North Rivanna WTP (sourcing from North Fork Rivanna River)
All are surface water supplies replenished naturally through precipitation, stream flow, overland runoff, and groundwater movement. These sources feature minimal mineral content and are notably "soft" (low in hardness/scale), with little of the iron or manganese commonly found in local groundwater.
Each facility employs both physical and chemical treatment processes before distribution. Sodium hypochlorite disinfects the water at all plants, and fluoride is added to support dental health. Your water source may vary depending on system demand, storage levels, and your location.
Planned upgrades by RWSA will enhance treatment processes and water quality. These improvements specifically target reducing disinfection by-products (TTHMs and HAAs). VDH granted RWSA an extension for meeting stricter Stage 2 disinfection by-product requirements while significant upgrades are completed. Advanced granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment is being installed at each plant, with completion expected by spring 2018. Meanwhile, powdered activated carbon (PAC) is being used to meet quality standards. Beyond reducing disinfection by-products, GAC treatment should also improve taste and odor qualities.
