About Us
Chesapeake residents benefit from a diverse water supply system that includes two treatment facilities and partnerships with Norfolk and Portsmouth. The Northwest River Water Treatment Plant processes up to 10 million gallons daily from the Northwest River and four brackish groundwater wells, utilizing both conventional treatment methods and reverse osmosis technology. This facility primarily serves areas south of Providence Road.
Since April 2006, the Lake Gaston Water Treatment Plant has provided 8 million gallons daily using advanced ultrafiltration technology. Currently processing raw water purchased from Norfolk, this plant will eventually treat Chesapeake's water from Lake Gaston, ensuring water needs are met beyond 2040.
Residents in Indian River and South Norfolk (northwest of Providence Road) receive Norfolk-treated water, while Western Branch customers receive Portsmouth-treated water. These high-quality sources meet or exceed Safe Drinking Water Act standards. Cavalier Industrial Park, Camelot, and Brentwood now receive water from both treatment plants.
The Western Branch wells include Wells #1 and #3 plus an Aquifer Storage and Recovery well. These provide natural fluoridation for Lake Gaston treated water. Additionally, Aqua Virginia serves approximately 526 customers in Norfolk Highlands (customer service: 877-987-2782).

Protecting your family begins with emergency preparedness before crisis strikes. Start by gathering everyone to discuss what to do in various emergency scenarios. When disaster occurs, your immediate concerns will likely be: Where are my family members? Are they safe? How do we reach safety?
Since emergencies can happen without warning, knowing your family's location and maintaining communication is crucial. Plan ahead by discussing different scenarios with your family:
- What actions should we take during a fire, hurricane, flood, or tornado?
- Where will we reunite if separated?
- Who should serve as our emergency contacts?
- Where would we evacuate to if necessary?
- What if our home becomes uninhabitable?
When discussing these plans with children, consider their comprehension level and provide age-appropriate information.
