About Us
Water is processed at NNWW treatment facilities where it first passes through screening systems to remove debris. Aluminum sulfate (alum) and polymer are added during clarification for flocculation and coagulation to eliminate organic materials. After clarification, ozone disinfection kills bacteria and viruses.
The water then flows through filtration systems to capture remaining impurities. Lime adjusts pH levels, fluoride is added for dental health, and zinc orthophosphate helps control pipe corrosion. Finally, chloramines provide secondary disinfection as water travels through distribution pipes to homes and businesses.
For groundwater sources, NNWW operates a desalination plant in Lee Hall. Using reverse osmosis technology, high-pressure systems force water through specialized membranes that remove salt and contaminants, producing high-quality water. This treated groundwater blends with processed surface water before distribution.
NNWW completed source water assessments prior to 2003. For information about these assessments, contact Hampton Roads Planning District Commission at (757) 420-8300 or NNWW directly at (757) 926-1000.
