Chesapeake benefits from having two treatment facilities and agreements to purchase treated water from Norfolk and Portsmouth municipalities. Supplementary water is also available from an auxiliary well system used during peak demand periods.

The City's Northwest River Water Treatment Plant processes approximately 10 million gallons daily (MGD) from the Northwest River and brackish groundwater via four wells. This facility employs both conventional treatment methods (coagulation, sedimentation, filtration) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology. This supply typically serves residents south of Providence Road, though distribution patterns may adjust based on usage.

In April 2006, the Lake Gaston Water Treatment Plant (LGWTP) was commissioned, providing the city with treated water using innovative ultrafiltration technology. Currently processing raw water purchased from Norfolk, this facility will eventually treat Chesapeake's own water from Lake Gaston, ensuring sufficient supply through 2040 and beyond.

Customers in Indian River and South Norfolk areas (generally north of Providence Road) receive treated water from Norfolk, while Western Branch residents receive water from Portsmouth. Both sources consistently meet or exceed Safe Drinking Water Act standards. Residents in Cavalier Industrial Park, Camelot, and Brentwood now receive water from the Northwest River and Lake Gaston Treatment Plants.

The Western Branch wells include groundwater from Wells #1, #3, and the Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) well. These wells provide natural fluoridation to complement treated water from LGWTP due to naturally occurring fluoride in the native water. Additionally, Aqua Virginia, Inc. serves approximately 526 customers in the Norfolk Highlands neighborhood (customer service: 877-987-2782).

Protecting your family starts with developing a comprehensive emergency plan so you're prepared for unexpected situations. Emergency preparedness begins with family discussions about actions to take during serious incidents.

When disasters occur, your primary concerns likely include: Where are my family members? Is everyone safe? How can we reach safety? Since emergencies often happen without warning, knowing your family's whereabouts and maintaining communication channels is crucial.

Gather your household and consider various emergency scenarios:

  • What procedures should we follow during fires, hurricanes, floods, or tornados?
  • Where should we rendezvous if separated?
  • Who should serve as our emergency contacts?
  • What evacuation routes should we take?
  • What contingency plans exist if our home becomes uninhabitable?

For families with children, tailor discussions appropriately to their comprehension level.
