Your municipal water originates from the Green River. We actively work to protect this source from contamination in partnership with the State to assess vulnerabilities in our water supply system.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has developed a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for untreated water sources serving our system. This report evaluates potential contamination risks to raw water supplies. To ensure safe tap water, all public systems treat and regularly test their water quality.

Water sources are categorized as moderately susceptible, fairly susceptible, or slightly susceptible based on geological factors and human activities near the water supply. The Waynesboro Water System sources have been rated as fairly susceptible to potential contamination.

Why are there contaminants in my water?
All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. How can I get involved?
Our Water Board meets on the second and fourth Mondays at 5:30 p.m. at the Waynesboro City Hall, located at the corner of Hwy 64 East and Court Square. Community participation is welcome at these meetings.

Regulatory Compliance
State and EPA regulations require regular testing and reporting to ensure water safety. We consistently meet all requirements, and unregulated contaminant analysis results are available upon request.

About Your Water Sources
Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

• Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial wastewater, farming, mining, or oil/gas production
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
• Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

To ensure tap water safety, EPA and Tennessee regulations limit certain contaminants in public water systems. Waynesboro's treatment processes are designed to reduce these substances to levels well below health concerns. FDA regulations establish similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
