Source Water Assessment and Supply Information

SURFACE WATER: Lake Meredith's watershed consists primarily of agricultural and ranching areas. The main susceptibility for contamination comes from farming practices, including fertilizers, pesticides, and runoff from Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs).

GROUNDWATER: Amarillo's municipal wells are situated predominantly in agricultural regions. Primary contamination risks include farm chemicals, CAFOs, septic systems, oil field activities, and abandoned private wells. The city maintains an active Wellhead Protection Program that implements TCEQ standards to prevent pollutants from entering the groundwater supply.

2016 WATER LOSS REPORT: In the assessment submitted to the Texas Water Development Board for January-December 2016, the system lost approximately 475 million gallons, representing about 3% of total water. For questions about this report, contact the Public Water System (PWS) or TWDB at (512) 463-7847. For Water Quality Report inquiries, contact the Drinking Water Quality Group at (512) 239-4691 or email pwsccr@tceq.texas.gov. When contacting TCEQ, please reference Amarillo Municipal Water System, PSW ID: 18800001.
