Bensalem Township was established in 1692 with boundaries that remain unchanged to this day. The township is bordered by water on three sides – the Neshaminy Creek, Delaware River, and Poquessing Creek – with Lower Southampton Township at Brownsville Road completing its fourth boundary. Historical records from the 1681 Holme Map indicate just 12 original landowners across the 21 square miles of territory.
From its early days of riverside estates and agricultural properties, Bensalem has evolved into a vibrant commercial and residential community. Today, the township welcomes thousands of residents from diverse backgrounds worldwide, creating a rich cultural tapestry.
Most of Bensalem's historic mansions were constructed between 1700 and 1800. Only Andalusia and Pen Ryn remain open for public events. Pen Ryn's history features both a captivating love story and a remarkable ghost tale, documented in the Historical Society's publication "Going Through Bensalem 1692-1984."
Recent historical discoveries concern the magnificent 1685 Growden Mansion. When Joseph Galloway (husband of Grace Growden) was declared a traitor, the property was sold at sheriff's auction in 1779 to General James Wilkinson, who according to new evidence, was also revealed to be a traitor. This historic building still stands as a monument to Bensalem's rich heritage.
Each April, Neshaminy State Park hosts Civil War Re-enactments, now the largest free event of its kind on the East Coast, attracting over 20,000 visitors. During World War II, two industrial facilities along State Road played crucial roles in maintaining aircraft operations. For more details about these historical events, consult the Historical Society's upcoming publication or contact their office at (215) 639-6575.
