Upper Uwchlan Township was established as a separate municipality in 1858, after being part of Greater Uwchlan Township for over 125 years. The township's division was primarily due to its substantial size of 22.52 square miles, which made governance challenging.
Geographically, Upper Uwchlan sits on a plateau between the North Valley Hills to the south and Nantmeal Hills to the north. It belongs to Pennsylvania's Piedmont region, positioned just south of the Welsh Mountain anticline that terminates at Black Horse Hill.
Regarding water drainage, more than two-thirds of the township drains via Marsh Creek and its tributary, Black Horse Run, which eventually flow into Brandywine Creek at Dorlan's Mill. The eastern third, along Route 100, drains through Pickering Creek's headwaters toward the Schuylkill River below Phoenixville.
The township's main transportation routes include north-south Route 100 and Little Conestoga Road, which runs northwest from Eagle Hotel. Little Conestoga Road, known on early maps as the Allegheny Path, is considered Pennsylvania's oldest road between the Delaware and Susquehanna Rivers. Route 100 was rerouted in 1839 to intersect with the Conestoga Turnpike (Route 401) at Ludwig's Corner, primarily to direct more business traffic toward Eagle.
For additional historical information, residents can read "A Place Betwixt and Between," a comprehensive history of Upper Uwchlan Township authored by Estelle Cremers and Pam Shenk, published in 1999. This softcover book is available for purchase at the township office for $15.
