WATER SOURCE INFORMATION

The primary drinking water source for Bonita Springs is underground. The lime-softening treatment process utilizes groundwater from the low Tamiami Aquifer. BSU manages two well fields east of Interstate 75, with 19 water wells at approximately 100 feet depth. For reverse-osmosis treatment, the utility draws from the brackish Lower Hawthorne Aquifer through 11 wells ranging from 800-1,500 feet deep.

In 2017, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) conducted a Source Water Assessment as part of their Source Water Assessment and Protection Program (SWAPP). This evaluation identified twelve potential contamination sources with low to moderate susceptibility levels. It's important to understand these are only potential concerns, as many facilities operate under strict regulatory requirements designed to protect public health and the environment.

TREATMENT PROCESSES

Bonita Springs Utilities employs a dual treatment approach. The lime-softening process includes hydrogen sulfide removal, hardness reduction, filtration, and chlorination. The reverse-osmosis process incorporates membrane treatment, degasification, and chlorination. Both methods utilize corrosion inhibitors to prevent plumbing deterioration in homes and businesses. The final drinking water product is a blend from these two processes.

BSU adheres to water industry best practices to deliver reliable water quality through an efficient system. Continuous testing and monitoring ensure compliance with all federal and state requirements. The BSU board of directors and staff are proud to report that our water meets all federal and state standards.
