About Us
Municipal water standards require treatment of source water which naturally contains various substances and potential contaminants that must be filtered to meet federal safety regulations. Natural water sources are never completely pure – even rainfall contains dissolved minerals and chemicals.
Sources of municipal water include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water moves across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials. It may also pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
All water, including bottled varieties, typically contains at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.
Common source water contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses/bacteria) from sewage treatment, septic systems, agriculture and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts/metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, wastewater, oil/gas production, mining or farming
- Pesticides/herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and waste systems
- Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or oil/gas/mining operations
EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. FDA establishes similar limits for bottled water. Lead, if present in elevated levels, poses significant health risks, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters water through service lines and home plumbing materials. To minimize exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption. For concerns about lead content, consider water testing through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or EPA.gov/safewater/lead.
