The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from materials in service lines and household plumbing.
While Bristol's public water supply system delivers quality water, they cannot control the materials used in plumbing components. When water sits unused for several hours, you can minimize lead exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using it for drinking or cooking. One of the most innovative processes at the Portland water treatment facility is its ability to generate disinfectant on-site. This is accomplished through a Microclor OSHG (on-site hypochlorite generator), which was installed and began operating in 2013.
The Portland facility pioneered this technology in Tennessee, becoming the first water system in the state to implement a Microclor OSHG at their treatment plant. Several other regional water systems—including LaGuardo Utility District, Bowling Green Municipal Utilities, and Nashville Metro Water—have since visited Portland's facility to learn about the operation and maintenance procedures for this innovative system.
