California Water Utility Companies

In late 2002, California Water submitted a Water Source Assessment and Protection Program (DWSAPP) report to the Division of Liquids (DDW) for each water source in the system. This report identifies potential contamination sources to prioritize cleanup efforts. The water resources in this district are considered most vulnerable to these activities, though no associated contaminants have been detected:

  • Sewer collection systems
  • Gas stations
  • Dry cleaners
  • Underground storage tanks (confirmed leaking)
  • Chemical/petroleum pipelines
  • Electrical/electronic manufacturing
  • Research laboratories
  • Agricultural drainage
  • Agricultural wells

SCVWD supplies treated surface water from three treatment plants. Their water primarily comes from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta watershed via the Southern Bay Aqueduct, Lake Del Valle, and San Luis Reservoir. Local sources include Anderson and Calero Reservoirs.

SCVWD's source waters face potential contamination from various land-use practices including:

  • Agricultural and urban runoff
  • Recreational activities
  • Livestock grazing
  • Residential and industrial development

Imported sources are additionally vulnerable to wastewater treatment plant discharges, seawater intrusion, and wildland fires. Local sources face risks from commercial stables and historical mining operations.

No contaminants associated with these activities have been detected in either SCVWD or Los Altos treated water. The treatment plants provide multiple barriers for physical removal and disinfection of contaminants. For more information, visit www.valleywater.org. We encourage residents to join our efforts to prevent water pollution and protect this vital natural resource.
