About Us
Palo Alto's municipal water is supplied by the San Francisco Regional Water System (SF38S), owned and operated by the San Francisco Public Utility Commission (SFPUC). The primary water source comes from spring snowmelt flowing through the Tuolumne River into the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir.
This well-protected water source meets exemption criteria from filtration requirements established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and State Water Resources Control Board's Division of Drinking Water (SWRCB-DDW).
Water from Hetch Hetchy undergoes several treatment processes to ensure safety and quality:
- Disinfection using ultraviolet (UV) light and chlorine
- Corrosion control through pH value adjustment
- Fluoridation for dental health protection
- Chloramination to maintain disinfectant levels and minimize byproduct formation
