The SFPUC's Water Quality Department (WQD) consistently collects and analyzes tap water samples from reservoirs and designated testing points throughout the system to verify that water delivered to Stanford meets federal and state standards. In 2017, WQD staff performed over 55,273 water quality assessments across transmission and distribution networks, complementing the extensive monitoring conducted by certified operators and automated instruments.

All water, including bottled varieties, may contain trace amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. To ensure public safety, the USEPA and SWRCB-DDW establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations and California laws set similar standards for bottled water products.

Water sources typically include rivers, lakes, oceans, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through soil layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive elements. It can also pick up substances from animal presence or human activities, collectively referred to as contaminants in source water.
