About Us
Where Does My Municipal Water Come From?
North Water System (PWS #03-19-126): Serving Governors Club, Briar Chapel, Bynum, sections of Moncure, Corinth, and Merry Oaks vicinity. Water is sourced from Jordan Lake and processed at the Chatham County Water Treatment Facility, established in 1995. This facility can treat and distribute up to 3 million gallons daily (MGD). Current raw water usage averages 1.892 MGD with an annual total of 690.58 MG. Finished water averages 1.731 MGD with an annual production of 631.82 MG.
Asbury Water System (PWS #40-19-010): Serving Asbury and parts of Moncure. Chatham County purchases water from Sanford City, which draws from the Cape Fear River. This river is formed by the confluence of the Haw, Deep, and Rocky Rivers that create the Cape Fear River Basin.
Southwest Water System (PWS #03-19-050): Serving Silk Hope, Highway 902, Bonlee, Harpers Crossroad, and Bennett vicinity. Water is purchased from Siler City, which uses the Rocky River as its single surface water source.

Customers served by Siler City's water (Southwest Water System) and Sanford's water (Asbury Water System) must also follow their specific water restrictions. Chatham County's history spans back to 1771-1971, as documented by Doris Goerch Horton, Nell Craig Strowd, and Wade Hadley. Historical records show European settlers arrived in the region by the mid-1700s, including a Quaker settlement established in 1751. Early colonists entered from the north via Catawba Indian trading routes and from the south through the Cape Fear River Valley.
The Colonial Assembly established Chatham County through legislation passed on December 5, 1770, taking effect April 1, 1771. The county was formed from a portion of Orange County and named after William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham, who advocated for American rights in British Parliament. The county's formation aimed to provide better accessibility for residents in the southern regions who found it difficult and expensive to travel to Hillsborough (Orange County's government seat).
In its early years, justices of the peace administered the county through the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. These justices, appointed by the state's General Assembly, also selected other county officials including sheriffs, coroners, constables, deputies, registers, attorneys, standard-keepers, entry takers, surveyors, rangers (who managed stray animals), and road overseers.
The Reconstruction era and the 1868 State Constitution transformed local governance by establishing a five-member board of county commissioners, dividing the county into townships, and reforming the court system. Justices of the peace were removed from county government in 1894. In 1977, Chatham adopted the council-manager form of government and appointed its first county administrator. Today, five county commissioners serve four-year staggered terms, representing specific districts but elected county-wide.
