The City and County of Broomfield is treasured by residents who take pride in maintaining hometown values and the community atmosphere they've created. Founded in the late 19th century, Broomfield began as an agricultural settlement with community-oriented families who arrived following gold-seekers hoping to strike it rich in Colorado's frontier.
Thousands of years ago, geological forces created the Rocky Mountains to the west of Broomfield. Ancient animals roamed this area, leaving fossils that attract paleontologists today. Over centuries, glaciers and floods carved the terrain into plains with rolling fields that attracted wildlife including deer, elk and buffalo. These game animals drew Native Americans to the region: Apaches, Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes who hunted as they followed migrating herds.
Modern history brought Broomfield into the United States through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The area was variously designated as part of Missouri Territory, Nebraska and Kansas until 1861 when Colorado Territory was established. In 1876, Broomfield officially joined the union when Colorado achieved statehood.
In the late 1800s, dryland farms characterized the landscape. In 1885, when Adolph Zang purchased the area near present-day 120th Avenue and Olde Wadsworth Boulevard, the train stop became known as Zang's Spur, where locally grown grains were loaded onto railcars for delivery to Zang Brewing Company in Denver. Eventually, Zang acquired 4,000 acres for his Elmwood Stock Farm, breeding Percheron horses and tending orchards. Sharecroppers worked the land, with half in dryland crops and half in irrigated farming.
By the turn of the century, Broomfield was a small town centered around 120th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Grain elevators, a grocery, hotel, bank and other businesses served local farmers. Their sense of community led to the establishment of the Crescent Grange in 1898, bringing residents together for various activities including postal service requests, cooperative purchasing arrangements, insurance, programs and social events.
Today's Broomfield continues to grow with expanding retail operations, diverse cultural activities, and a strong economic foundation in technology businesses establishing in modern business parks throughout the area.
