The City of Brenham was established in 1843, initially known as Hickory Grove community. In 1844, residents renamed it to honor Dr. Richard Fox Brenham, a Kentucky physician who practiced in Washington County. Though he never resided within city limits, Dr. Brenham's contributions were significant. According to historical accounts from 1915, he was described as an exceptional man with remarkable physical and intellectual qualities worth emulating.
Brenham became Washington County's seat in 1844 and has maintained this status since. The city officially incorporated in 1858, with inaugural elections held on May 29 that year. In 2008, Brenham celebrated its 150th anniversary with various festivities including a Mayor's Gala. The municipality operates under a Home-Rule charter with a City Manager/Council government system established in 1968.
Railroad development significantly shaped Brenham's growth. The Washington County Railroad was completed by 1861, making Brenham one of only three sizeable railroad towns in Texas during the Civil War era, alongside Houston and Galveston. This transportation advantage established Brenham as an economically vital hub. Today, approximately 40 trains pass through daily, operating within a Railroad Quiet Zone established in 2011.
A pivotal historical event, "The Burning of Brenham" in September 1866, led to the creation of the Brenham Fire Department. Following military occupation during Reconstruction, tensions between Union soldiers and residents escalated into conflict that resulted in soldiers setting fire to much of the town. This disaster prompted the formation of a fire department that played a dual role in protecting residents from both fires and occupying troops.
The Fire Department significantly contributed to the community by acquiring 14 acres in 1883 that became Fireman's Park, the city's first municipal park. The park houses Fireman's Field, home to the State Champion Brenham Cub Baseball team, earning the city its nickname as "The Baseball Capital of Texas." The department also revived Maifest, a springtime youth celebration originally started in 1874.
One of Brenham's treasured attractions is the Flying Horses Antique Carousel in Fireman's Park. Purchased in 1932 and housed in a WPA-constructed building from 1935, this carousel features horses carved by Charles W. Dare between 1867-1901, making it a rare historical artifact.
Brenham established the first public school system in Texas in 1875, including Pickard High School for Black students. The schools have maintained high standards, becoming the first in Texas to receive accreditation and joining the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools since 1915.
According to the 2010 census, Brenham has 15,716 residents. The city employs over 200 people and uniquely owns all utilities—electric, gas, water, wastewater, and sanitation—making it one of approximately 10 Texas municipalities with complete utility ownership.
