In 1787, the Maryland General Assembly established the town of Cumberland through legislation during that session. This action officially recognized a community that had existed in various forms for thousands of years.
Indigenous peoples inhabited this area long before European settlement, with artifacts indicating civilizations dating before Christ. The natural beauty surrounding the confluence of Wills Creek and the Potomac River has attracted inhabitants throughout history.
Cumberland evolved from an American Indian village to a western outpost of rustic cabins built by European Americans. The city grew into a vital transportation hub, serving as the starting point of the original National Road (now Route 40) and later becoming home to numerous railways and the western terminus of the famous C&O Canal.
As Cumberland progressed through the 19th and into the 20th century, it became less dependent on railways as more diverse industries moved to the region. Glass manufacturing, processing, tire production and steel became significant economic drivers.
Like many American cities in the late 20th century, Cumberland faced economic challenges as numerous industries closed their doors, affecting the local population. However, the resilient community recognized its rich historical assets and began developing small firms focused on tourism. The economy continued to improve as various manufacturing firms relocated to the area.
Today, the future looks brighter than it has in years, primarily because Cumberland offers something increasingly rare—an exceptional quality of life. Nestled among the Appalachian Mountains, this beautiful small city attracts those seeking tranquility, peace, and friendly neighbors.

- What's the best way to eliminate air or discolored water from my plumbing? To remove air, open a faucet at your home's highest point. For discolored water, run the faucet at your home's lowest point. If problems persist, please contact our office for assistance.
- How should I address bad taste or odor in my water? Older homes may occasionally experience taste or odor issues related to aging plumbing. Try running the affected faucet for 1-5 minutes. If the problem continues, contact our office for further support.
- Why are there colored markings on my property or street? Utility companies use temporary paint to mark buried infrastructure before excavation work. The national color code includes: Blue (Water), Green (Wastewater), Red (Electric), Yellow (Gas), Orange (Telecommunications), and White (Proposed excavation). These markings typically wash away within days. Always call 811 before digging to avoid service interruptions or injuries.
