About Us
The Maryland Environmental Support (MES) manages and operates the water treatment facility for Frostburg. This facility has a capacity of approximately 3.0 million gallons per day (MGD) with current average usage of 1.2 MGD. Frostburg's water comes from multiple sources, including:
- Twenty-nine maintained springhouses with collection equipment
- Two deep wells in the Pocono aquifer
- Raw water pumped from the Piney Dam reservoir in Garrett County
All raw water merges in a million-gallon supply reservoir before treatment. The facility employs a comprehensive surface water treatment process that includes coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration - specifically tailored for Frostburg's water profile.
After treatment, water is stored in two finished water reservoirs. Final treatment includes adding chlorine for disinfection, fluoride for dental health, and a corrosion inhibitor to maintain distribution system integrity. Certified MES personnel conduct daily facility checks, operational testing, calibrations, and maintenance to ensure quality standards are met.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities. All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains small amounts of some compounds, though this doesn't necessarily indicate health risks.
The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water. Common contaminant sources include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or oil/gas production and mining
