Maryland Water Utility Companies

The Department of Water Works is responsible for operating and maintaining Salisbury's two municipal water treatment facilities and three remote storage tanks. Our community relies on groundwater resources for both residential consumption and fire protection services. Annually, we pump over 2.2 billion gallons into the city's distribution system.

Our Water division employs 13 dedicated professionals who hold certifications from the Maryland Division of the Environment for water treatment operations. The Park water facility, located along East Main Street, can produce four million gallons daily from 9 active wells. Built in 1926, this facility is protected under a historical preservation easement. Treatment processes include pH adjustment, oxygenation, fluoridation, disinfection, and addition of food-grade phosphate to prevent pipe corrosion.

Our Paleo water facility on Naylor Mill Road was constructed in 1976 with a 6.5 million gallon daily capacity. It utilizes two supply wells (with a third coming online soon) drilled to depths of 180-200 feet, tapping an ancient ice-age water channel. These wells can each produce up to 4,500 gallons per minute. Treatment includes iron and manganese filtration, pH adjustment, fluoridation, disinfection and phosphate addition.

Combined, our facilities pump an average of 5.5 million gallons daily, with peak days reaching 8 million gallons. Our 5.5 million gallon storage capacity across our plants and three elevated tanks (Edgemore Drive, Salisbury University and Wor-Wic) maintains optimal pressure, meets peak demand, and ensures fire protection reserves. Staff regularly conduct comprehensive testing for bacteria, metals, and organic compounds to ensure water quality and regulatory compliance.
