- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
