City of Modesto, Salida
About Us
The city currently manages 79 wells, 9 storage facilities, and 181 water sampling locations. Until 1995, residents received water exclusively from groundwater wells. To ensure consistent quality water delivery, the City partnered with Modesto Irrigation District (MID) to establish a surface water treatment facility at Modesto Reservoir.
This treatment facility produces water meeting all federal and state quality standards. In 2017, approximately 43% of supplied water came from groundwater wells, while 58% was treated surface water.
Surface Water Treatment Process:
- Water from Modesto Reservoir enters the treatment plant where ozone disinfection occurs
- Liquid alum and polymers are introduced to attract suspended particles, forming floc
- The water flows through sedimentation basins allowing floc to settle
- Anthracite filters remove any remaining particles
- Chlorine provides final disinfection
- Lime and carbon dioxide are added to prevent pipe corrosion
Treated water flows to Modesto and into two 5-million-gallon storage tanks. From there, it's pumped into the distribution system where it mixes with groundwater before reaching homes through service lines for cooking, bathing, and drinking.
