Storm Water Rate Study
Stanley Consultants prepared and presented a comprehensive assessment to the City Council on March 4, 2013. View the complete presentation (PDF).
Understanding Storm Water Runoff
Stormwater runoff occurs when rainfall or snowmelt flows across impermeable surfaces like roadways, buildings, and compacted soil. This runoff collects in storm drains and is channeled directly into waterways without treatment.
Modern Storm Water Management
Traditional approaches focused primarily on flood prevention. Today, our City must manage both water quality and quantity by implementing practices that increase rainfall infiltration and decrease runoff volume.
Community Awareness & Responsibility
Everyday activities impact water quality. Most precipitation flows untreated through neighborhood storm drains into natural waterways. You can prevent stormwater pollution by:
- Properly cleaning up after pets
- Minimizing fertilizer usage
- Correctly disposing of household hazardous waste
- Redirecting roof drainage to gardens or vegetated areas
- Washing vehicles at carwashes or on lawns instead of driveways
Storm Water Management Education Program
This page contributes to our stormwater program's public education campaign. Our community participates in the Iowa Stormwater Education Program, which provides educational resources and guidance about stormwater management to member communities. Visit the Iowa Storm Water website for additional information.
