Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants in tap water than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems - including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants - may face heightened risks from infections. These vulnerable groups should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption habits.

The USEPA and CDC offer guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants through their Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Oceanside obtains water from three primary sources:

  • Imported raw water purchased from San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA), treated at Oceanside's Weese water treatment facility (approximately 51% of supply)
  • Treated water purchased directly from SDCWA, which includes blended water from the Carlsbad Desalination Plant (approximately 36% of supply)
  • Local groundwater processed at Oceanside's Mission Basin Desalting Facility (MBDF), which treats brackish groundwater from San Luis Rey River valley wells through reverse osmosis (approximately 13% of supply)

Roughly 87% of Oceanside's water is imported from distant sources - Northern California rivers and Colorado River Basin. The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) transports this water via a 242-mile aqueduct from Lake Havasu and a 444-mile aqueduct from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. These waters converge at Lake Skinner in Riverside County before SDCWA purchases and distributes it throughout San Diego County.
