OUR WATER IS REGULATED
This report summarizes the quality of water we provide to our customers, based on the most recent EPA-mandated assessments. We hope this information helps you become more knowledgeable about what's in your municipal water.

Water Sources
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining

En Español
Este informe incluye información importante sobre el agua potable. Si tiene preguntas o comentarios sobre éste informe en español, favor de llamar al tel. (972) 412-6135 (Denise Gomez) para hablar con una persona bilingüe en español.

Where We Get Our Water
The City of Rowlett utilizes Purchased SURFACE Water. A Source Water Susceptibility Assessment is currently being updated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, describing potential contaminant sources based on human activities and natural conditions. Some assessment information is available at Texas Drinking Water Watch: http://dww.tceq.state.tx.us/DWW/. For details on source water protection efforts, please contact us.

ALL Municipal Water Contains Some Contaminants
When water meets federal standards, there may be no health advantages to bottled water or filtration systems. All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Secondary Constituents
Many elements commonly found in water (like calcium, sodium, or iron) can cause taste, color, and odor issues. These are called secondary constituents and are regulated by Texas, not the EPA. These constituents aren't health concerns and therefore aren't required in this report, though they may significantly affect water aesthetics.

City of Rowlett Municipal Water Report History

Daniel Rowlett and a small group of immigrant families departed Tennessee for Texas in late 1835, settling in the Tulip Bend region of the Red River near present-day Bonham. Through his military service during the Texas revolution, Rowlett earned a land grant in Collin County, close to modern Allen. A significant waterway running through this property became known as Rowlett's Creek, though Daniel Rowlett himself remained a prominent Fannin County resident and never lived near his namesake creek. He is interred in Bonham's "Old Inglish Cemetery."

The area now called Rowlett was originally divided between two immigration enterprises: The W.S. Peters Colony (west of Rowlett Road) and the Charles Mercer Colony (primarily east of Rowlett Road). American settlers began arriving in the 1840s after Dallas County's formation in 1846. French and German-speaking immigrants, who had established central Texas colonies as early as 1844, moved northward during the 1850s.

The community's first post office opened April 5, 1880, initially named Morris after Postmaster Austin Morris before being renamed Rowlett to reflect the creek that feeds the east fork of the Trinity River. Post-Civil War railroad expansion brought new waves of settlers, with the Greenville & Dallas Railroad reaching Rowlett in 1889. By 1900, Rowlett had developed into a thriving agricultural community with stores, services, schools, and churches.

The Bankhead Highway—America's second transcontinental paved road running from Washington D.C. to San Diego—reached Rowlett in 1921. The City of Rowlett was officially incorporated in 1952 by a vote of eighty-four citizens. Cotton was historically the primary industry, with two cotton gins still standing today though repurposed for other uses.

Interstate Highway 30 construction in the 1960s provided a more direct route to Dallas, while Lake Ray Hubbard Reservoir's completion in 1971 transformed Rowlett into a lakefront community with over 30 miles of shoreline. This Dallas-owned reservoir serves as a drinking water source while supporting popular recreational activities.

With interstate access and lakefront appeal, Rowlett's growth became inevitable—expanding from 5,100 residents in 1978 to approximately 56,000 today. Many founding families' descendants remain, making Rowlett truly a community built by family, friends, and community spirit.

Modern Rowlett
Today, Rowlett hosts approximately 62,000 residents along Lake Ray Hubbard in eastern Dallas County and western Rockwall County. Located just 20 minutes from downtown Dallas, the city occupies two peninsulas extending into the lake, offering over 30 miles of beautiful shoreline for sunset-watching, kayaking from Scenic Point Park, family picnics, and various water sports—a distinctive lakeside living experience rare in the region.

Residents choose Rowlett for its close-knit community benefits: award-winning schools, unique shopping, affordable housing, quality healthcare including an excellent local hospital, beautiful lakeside parks, diverse community events, and much more. Recent major transportation improvements—the President George Bush Turnpike and DART Blue Line light rail—now serve as economic catalysts attracting visitors and development directly to Rowlett, positioning it as a destination for businesses and prospective residents seeking attractive, affordable urban-style lakefront living.
