City of Donna Municipal Water Report Info
A BRIEF HISTORY
Donna is named for Donna Hooks, daughter of T.J. Snares who pioneered significant land development in the Rio Grande Valley starting in 1900. Several northern families, including the Ruthven, Champion, and Hooks families, established the area's early settlements. Thomas Jefferson Hooks arrived in 1900 and formed the La Blanca Agricultural Company in 1902, purchasing 23,000 acres along the river.

His daughter Donna Hooks Fletcher, a 21-year-old divorcee, received part of this land and established the Alameda Ranch. She stocked it with Jersey cattle from the Lassater Ranch in Falfurrias and ran a successful butter operation.

TOWN DEVELOPMENT
The railway reached the site in July 1904, marking the town's founding. In 1907, the community was named after Donna Fletcher, who became postmistress when the post office opened in 1908. That same year, Ed Ruthven established the first store in west Donna, and the settlement gained recognition as Texas's most productive shipping station. A 500-ton sugar mill was also constructed.

COMMUNITY GROWTH
The Donna Developer newspaper began printing on December 1, 1910. That year also saw the construction of the Community Church (shared by Protestant groups), and the founding of both the First Presbyterian and First Baptist churches. Telephone service arrived in 1911, and Donna incorporated on April 13 of that year.

By 1912, the settlement had split into Donna and East Donna, with East Donna serving the Mexican community with its own post office named Beatriz (after Beatriz Hooks) from 1912-1916. Saint Joseph Catholic Church and a school for Mexican children operated there.
